The Woods enjoyed a useful workout against Ryman Premier side Hendon on Wednesday night which gave several players some match time and saw produced a pretty good performance too. Hendon fielded a couple of triallists but there was also plenty of experience including the front-pairing of Elliott Charles and former Arsenal man Isaiah Rankin while Jerome Federico, who appeared briefly for the Woods last season, caused problems with his pace on the wing.
The game was played at a fast-pace throughout, especially in the first-half and Hendon enjoyed the better of the opening stages, hitting a post through Craig Tomkins and then taking the lead on 29 minutes. James Fraser was caught in possession by triallist George Smith and the ex-Southend youngster showed good skill to coolly chip the ball over Garry Malone and into the far corner.
But the Woods began to make inroads after this and both Romaine Walker and Dean Worman had gone close before good work from Garry Senior led to an easy chance for Walker which he slotted home to make it 1-1 at half-time.
Conversely, the second-half belonged to Northwood on the whole with the extra pace of Adamson Ajayi stretching the Hendon defence. He streaked past Ryan Wharton and then fired against the post soon after the restart while both Kyle Matthews and Spencer Bellotti were both guilty of missing some clear chances in front of goal. Another Ajayi run saw him cut the ball back to Harry Wright but his shot also blazed just over the bar.
Not so profligate was Jack Hutchinson who put the Woods ahead on 71 minutes when he strode forward from midfield and let fly with a low shot that beat goalkeeper Jordan Henderson from 20 yards, just inside the upright.
The Woods appeared to holding on to their narrow advantage but in the 88th minute a deep cross was met by a flicked header from another of the traillists, former Dulwich Hamlet youngster Kamboe Smith and the ball flew over Malone and in, giving him no chance.
Northwood almost snatched it in stoppage-time though when the returning James McCluskey fired from 25 yards and Henderson had to scramble across to push the ball wide of the goal.
